Wooden Award Winner
Zach Edey, C, Purdue (+3000)
Since 2010, only three players have won the Wooden Award at mid-major programs:
2011 – Jimmer Fredette, BYU
2014 – Doug McDermott, Creighton
2020 – Obi Toppin, Dayton
Of those three, Fredette is the best comparison for Drew Timme in regard to conference respect as the Atlantic 10 and Big East have far more national acclaim than the WCC. Timme would have to be statistically dominant compared to every other big man in order to be chosen. There are simply too many other talented bigs around the country for his +600 odds to have value.
Speaking of other talented bigs, Edey provides incredible value at 30/1. Last year Tshiebwe won the award averaging 17.4 points, 15.1 rebounds, 1.6 blocks and 1.8 steals. Purdue’s 7-foot-4 monster posted 14.4 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks as a sophomore last season. In the wake of Jaden Ivey’s departure to the NBA, I think Edey will be more of a focal point offensively for the Boilermakers with a chance to get into the ballpark of Tshiebwe’s numbers that won him the award. He just put up 30 points and 11 boards on Friday against Austin Peay.
