The Big 12 is as big as ever, but it will be difficult for the conference to do much better during the 2023-24 college football season.
Last season, the TCU Horned Frogs made a surprise run to the national championship game. They were eventually rolled by the Georgia Bulldogs in the title game, but Sonny Dykes’ squad put together an impressive 13-2 campaign during his first year at the helm.
TCU’s run to the title game should give more college football programs hope, particularly with an expanded playoff format on the horizon. It also put the Big 12 conference in the national championship game for the first time in the College Football Playoff era — just as the league is set to enter a transition period.
Oklahoma and Texas — two of the bigger programs in the league — are set to leave the Big 12 after one more year. BYU, UCF, Houston, and Cincinnati are all joining the Big 12 this season, meaning the conference will have 14 teams for just one year.
With the league as big as it has ever been, the conference race figures to be a daunting challenge for many of the top teams. Texas enters as the betting favorite, but the program often falls short of lofty preseason expectations.
With the college football season just weeks away, let’s dive into the latest betting odds at WynnBET.com’s online sportsbook to identify the best betting angles for the 2023-24 campaign.

Big 12 Win Totals Best Bets
Oklahoma Under 9.5 wins (-115)
Year 1 of the Brent Venables era didn’t go exactly as planned. After years of being a CFP contender with Lincoln Riley at the helm, the Sooners sank to a 6-7 finish and a loss in the Cheez-It Bowl last year.
OU’s win total being set at 9.5 would suggest that this team will have a better fate in its final year of competing in the Big 12. Maybe that’s true, but I have no problem betting against them to finish with double-digit victories. This conference is deeper than usual, and I have the Sooners projected just below nine wins in a year where they should get every team’s best shot on a weekly basis.
UCF Over 7 wins (-110)
Of all the Big 12 newbies, UCF has the best chance of immediate success. The Knights are coming off to back-to-back 9-win seasons in the American with Gus Malzahn at the helm. They have the proper infrastructure to make the jump to Power Five this fall and have staying power in a new-look Big 12.
Bill Connelly's SP+ projects UCF to be an underdog in just three games, with road games against Kansas State and Oklahoma serving as the biggest tests. I project north of eight wins for the Knights, and even consider them a dark horse to make the Big 12 title game this season.
Iowa State Over 5.5 wins (-120)
Matt Campbell has been the head coach of Iowa State since 2016, and has honestly been a gift to football bettors ever since. When the Cyclones have expectations, it is best to fade them. But he raises the floor so much that I love betting on this team when they are being overlooked.
The latter appears to be the case in 2023, with ISU’s win total being disrespectfully set at 5.5 by our oddsmakers. Iowa State has notched a bowl berth in five of its last six seasons, a feat it should once again accomplish this fall. I have the Cyclones projected to claim six-plus wins this season, and will gladly take this over here.
