2023 Big Game: Best Bets, Picks and Predictions for Chiefs vs. Eagles

After a brief three-week mini-heater, I cooled off and misfired on both conference championship games last weekend.

The 49ers were doomed from the start after Brock Purdy went down with an injury, and the Bengals blew it late against the Chiefs. I can’t say I regret the San Francisco pick given how wonky that game was, but I shouldn’t have trusted the Bengals offensive line as much as I did. Chris Jones ate that group alive, and his dominance was one of the game’s biggest storylines.

Alas, I’m back with a bet for Chiefs-Eagles. We still have plenty of time before kickoff but my mind is made up, and I’m ready to hit submit.

1. Eagles -1.5

Simply put, I think the Eagles have the better roster with significant edges in the trenches. A nice kicker is that I don’t expect Patrick Mahomes’ ankle to be 100%, and the injury could deteriorate as the game goes along, just as it did against the Bengals.

And while Kansas City has objectively the best QB in the NFL, Jalen Hurts is no slouch and has the better crop of skill players surrounding him with a trio of capable running backs, DeVonta Smith, A.J. Brown and Dallas Goedert. There’s no guarantee Kadarius Toney and Juju Smith-Schuster will be ready by Super Sunday.

Philadelphia had the league’s best pass defense during the regular season, and its pass rush has been dominant through two playoff games. The Eagles offensive line is much better than Cincinnati’s and should hold up better against Jones and Frank Clark.

Mahomes will have to be Superman in order to win this game, and that would be a tall task even without the high-ankle sprain. I like Philly and think the late money will be on the Eagles as well. I’m happy to take this now at -1.5.
