The transfer portal has become extremely important in the current age of college football.
With key players moving more than ever before, this can be an effective way for coaches to reload a roster. It also makes things more difficult for bettors and fans, as we attempt to familiarize ourselves with these teams entering the upcoming season.
From a betting perspective, individual players might not have that big of an impact on a team’s overall outlook. While position units can improve through the portal, only a select few additions will likely move the needle in a major way. This article will highlight a few of those standouts, to help prepare for the 2022-23 college football season.
1. Caleb Williams, Quarterback
New team: USC
Previous school: Oklahoma
Fortunately for us, 247Sports has a list of the top-50 players added through the transfer portal this offseason and quarterback Caleb Williams tops the list. Williams followed Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma to USC, and the expectation is that duo will make the Trojans a contender once again.
Williams, who replaced Spencer Rattler midseason at OU, finished with 1,912 passing yards and a 21:4 touchdown-interception ratio in his first collegiate season.
2. Jordan Addison, Wide Receiver
New team: USC
Previous school: Pittsburgh
Williams will have plenty of weapons around him at USC, starting with Jordan Addison after he was a late transfer from Pittsburgh. Addison caught 100 passes for 1,593 yards and 17 touchdowns last season on his way to winning the Biletnikoff Award given to the best receiver in college football.
Led by arguably the best QB-WR duo in the country, USC brought in the top transfer class in 2022 via that same ranking system at 247Sports.

3. Jahmyr Gibbs, Running Back
New team: Alabama
Previous school: Georgia Tech
Running backs tend to deliver under Nick Saban at Alabama, and Gibbs is hoping to be the latest back to do so after joining the Crimson Tide. In his 2021 campaign at Georgia Tech, Gibbs piled up 746 yards and four touchdowns on 143 attempts. Gibbs also caught 35 passes for 465 yards and two scores.
4. Quinn Ewers, Quarterback
New team: Texas
Previous school: Ohio State
Ewers is actually ranked No. 2 via the list at 247Sports, but I couldn’t quite get there for a player who has yet to throw a pass at the collegiate level. Ewers was ranked as the No. 1 overall player in the 2021 class coming out of high school, totaling 6,445 passing yards and 73 touchdowns in 22 career games.
The redshirt freshman is in a competition for the starting job at Texas, but fans should expect Ewers to see the field for the Longhorns in 2022.

5. Jaxson Dart, Quarterback
New team: Ole Miss
Previous school: USC
While Alabama cornerback Eli Ricks is the only other five-star prospect to transfer, and was actually ranked No. 5 on 247Sports’ transfer list, I chose to go with Dart here because he is a quarterback after all. Dart will replace Matt Corral, but Lane Kiffin has to believe the Rebels won’t miss a beat after going 10-3 en route to a Sugar Bowl appearance last year.
Dart completed 117-for-189 passes for 1,353 yards and nine touchdowns for the Trojans in 2021.
